Mastering HSK 3.0 Band 1: Your First Step to Chinese Fluency


HSK Band 1 represents the starting point of the HSK 3.0 proficiency system. It is designed for learners who can understand and use very simple Chinese words and phrases, meet basic communication needs, and possess the ability to further their Chinese language studies.

At this level, you are building the essential foundation for further learning, focusing on immediate relevance to daily life and survival communication.

1. Proficiency Goals

  • Listening: Can understand simple questions and introductions regarding personal information, daily events, common items, weather, and basic needs.
  • Speaking: Can conduct basic daily interactions, such as greetings, introductions, expressing needs, and asking simple questions.
  • Reading: Can recognize basic personal information, public signs, and short, simple texts on familiar topics.
  • Writing: Can write basic characters and fill in simple forms.

2. Tasks and Topics

The syllabus outlines specific communicative tasks and topics you should master to pass Band 1:

  • Personal Information: Name, nationality, age, gender, likes/dislikes, family members, friends, and skills.
  • Daily Life:
    • Time & Location: Dates, time, location, directions.
    • Items: Daily necessities, study supplies, describing size, quantity, and quality.
    • Weather: Good/bad conditions, hot/cold, rain/snow.
    • Food & Drink: Expressing preferences, ordering food, basic food names (water, milk, apples, dumplings, etc.).
    • Transportation: Modes of travel, schedules, and asking for directions.
    • Shopping: Asking for prices, checking availability, and expressing intent to buy.

3. Vocabulary and Characters

HSK 3.0 introduces stricter requirements for character recognition and handwriting compared to the previous version.

  • Vocabulary Count: You need to master approximately 500 words.
  • Character Recognition: You are expected to recognize about 300 Chinese characters.
  • Handwriting: A new requirement in HSK 3.0 is the ability to write 100 basic Chinese characters by hand (e.g., numbers, basic verbs, pronouns).

4. Grammar Points

Band 1 covers fundamental grammatical structures that allow you to form simple but correct sentences:

  • Word Classes:
    • Nouns: Location words (top, bottom, inside, outside, front, back).
    • Verbs: Auxiliary verbs (can, want to), Separable verbs (sleep, speak, class starts).
    • Pronouns: Personal (I, you, he/she, we, they), Demonstrative (this, that, here, there), Interrogative (what, who, where, how many).
    • Numerals: 0-100, thousands, concept of “half”.
    • Measure Words: General (ge, kuai, zhi, ben) and borrowed measure words (cup, bottle).
    • Adverbs: Degree (very, too), Scope (all), Time (in the process of), Negation (no, not).
    • Prepositions: At (zai), with (he).
    • Particles: Structural (de), Aspect (le), Modal (ma, ne, ba).
  • Sentence Structures:
    • Basic Patterns: Subject + Verb + Object.
    • Questions: Yes/no questions (ma), Wh-questions.
    • “Shi” Sentences: Equational sentences (A is B).
    • “You” Sentences: Existence/Possession (There is / Have).
    • Existential Sentences: Location + has + noun.
    • Serial Verb Sentences: Action 1 + Action 2 (e.g., go to [place] to do [action]).
